With Valentine’s Day on the way and many schools on break soon after, February is a good time to treat yourself to a little travel.

In Massachusetts, families, couples and solo travelers have plenty of options, from a luxurious city stay to a rustic farm retreat among friendly llamas.
For your next adventures, here are five inns and B&Bs that offer something a little out of the ordinary in the best sort of way.

The Old Mill Inn in Hatfield
This historic landmark, which was originally built as a grist mill more than 125 years ago, was converted to an inn in 2006 and retains all of the charms of Old New England while featuring luxurious, modern amenities. The Old Mill Inn’s location offers easy access to the scenic Berkshires and the 5-college area,  has plenty of activities to keep you busy. Try the inn’s famous Crème Brulee Toast for breakfast to fuel you for the day.

Clamber Hill Inn & Restaurant in Petersham
This romantic inn, owned and operated by Mark & Deni Ellis has five guest rooms and an intimate restaurant offering romantic candlelight dining in the evenings. The Inn is a prime destination for discriminating travelers in the North Quabbin region of Central Massachusetts, with quaint New England towns and unspoiled scenic vistas.  Both the town of Petersham and the Inn were recently featured on Chronicle’s Mystery Main Streets.  And the restaurant, which is open to the public Thursday, Friday and Saturdays received a great review from the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.

The Tivoli Inn in Martha’s Vineyard
If you’re keen on escaping to the Islands, a stay at the Tivoli Inn is an ideal winter retreat. This coastal gingerbread cottage is located in Oak Bluffs, home to some of New England’s most treasured properties. The inn is conveniently close (but not too close!) to Martha’s Vineyard’s boutique restaurants and shops, making it off the beaten path but not out of the way. Having an award-winning massage place just a seven-minute walk away doesn’t hurt either!

The Seagull Inn in Marblehead
Handcrafted Shaker furniture, cherry floors and original paintings are just a few of the amenities and decorations that adorn the Seagull Inn, welcoming guests to a classic Cape Ann experience. Castle Rock, a lovely spot to watch the sun rise or sink into the ocean, is just a few steps from the inn; visitors can also enjoy the scenery from the inside, as the dining room provides plenty of comfy seats and the fireplace is the perfect answer to any chilly evening. Rose and Goat Retreat in Florida
If your ideal ski trip involves the Berkshires and a quieter alternative to a bustling ski lodge, the creatively named Rose and Goat Retreat is the perfect balance of powder and tranquility. Perched atop Florida Mountain, the Rose and Goat’s four cottages present opportunities for outdoor adventurers of all types, including hiking, fishing and tubing. The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, one of New England’s finest art museums, is also just a stone’s throw away.
