Looking to do something fun this April Vacation? In Massachusetts, you’ve got options. Here are some spring break ideas for the whole family.
Greater Boston
April is the perfect time to visit Boston – the weather is warming up, and Patriots’ Day gives families plenty of opportunities to experience the city’s history and culture. History buffs should stop by the Freedom Trail and Boston Common (don’t miss the opening week of the Swan Boats and the Frog Pond Carousel). The Museum of Science, the New England Aquarium, and the Boston Children’s Museum are wonderful places for kids of all ages to explore and have fun. Sports fans can visit Fenway Park, or cheer on some of the best athletes in the world at the Boston Marathon (check out our spectator tips). Patriot Place in Foxborough offers shopping, dining, and the Patriots Hall of Fame.
Top tip: Check with your local library to see if they participate in a Museum Pass Program, through which you may be able to get discounted or free admission for your favorite cultural institution.
North of Boston
Did you know that roller skating is all the rage again? Get your kids moving at Roller World in Saugus or Roller Kingdom in Tyngsboro. For more throwback fun, the Salem Willows Arcade features both nostalgic and modern games, fun food, and a scenic ocean front location. Any budding princes or princesses should see the Hammond Castle in Gloucester and the Winnekenni Castle in Haverhill. Feeling crafty? Head to one of the North Shore’s many DIY art studios. Some locations, like Hammer and Stain North Shore and Clay Dreaming in Beverly are offering special April vacation week hours.
Top tip: Many attractions in Massachusetts are just beginning to open for the season and may have special seasonal days and hours. Please check each destination’s website while planning your visit.
South of Boston

The Plimoth Patuxet Museums are a great way to immerse your family in Indigenous and early colonial history in Massachusetts. Climb aboard the Mayflower II to learn about life on a 1600s sailing ship. If modern seafaring is more your family’s style, they’ll love the ships of Battleship Cove in Fall River. When the weather permits, you can take the family to one of the area’s many farms and gardens – The Winslow Farm Animal Sanctuary in Norton and Parsons Reserve in Dartmouth are some of our favorites. Looking for a dose of nostalgia? Catch a ride on a historic carousel at Paragon Carousel in Hull or the Fall River Carousel.
Cape Cod & the Islands
While it’s probably too cold to jump into the water at one of Cape Cod’s many beaches, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a ton to do. Museum lovers of all ages should see the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster, the Chatham Railroad Museum, or the Cape Cod Maritime Museum in Hyannis. Hop on a ferry over to Martha’s Vineyard to visit scenic stops like the Gingerbread Cottages or the Flying Horses Carousel in Oak Bluffs without the summer crowds. Head to neighboring Nantucket for their annual Daffodil Festival and witness the island burst into bloom.
Top Tip: 2026 marks Nantucket’s 50th Annual Daffodil Festival running Thursday April 23 through Sunday April 26.
Central Massachusetts

Experience spring on the farm in Central Massachusetts as many local farms and orchards open their gates for the season. Kids and adults alike can step back in time at Old Sturbridge Village, who host special events throughout April Vacation week. Similarly, the EcoTarium in Worcester hosts Community Science Week for kids throughout vacation week. Worcester’s Polar Park and the Worcester Red Sox make for a perfect day for any baseball fans.
Top tip: Weather in Massachusetts can vary widely throughout the spring. If the forecast looks dicey, please double check that any outdoor activities will still be offered for that day on the organization’s website or social media pages.
Western Massachusetts
Western Massachusetts offers tons of opportunities for your family to get outside. April is a perfect time to try hiking or biking as a family – the Hoosac Range trail, the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, and the October Mount State Forest all offer easy-to-moderate trails and amazing views. At Mount Greylock, families can sign up for hikes, geocaching, scavenger hunts, and more to get outdoors. For thrill seekers, Six Flags New England offers special spring break days to accommodate the whole family. Creatives in the family will enjoy vacation week programs at the Normal Rockwell Museum.
April School Vacation week brings fun opportunities for the whole family. As more Massachusetts’ attractions open for the warmer weather, and the state, cities, towns, and institutions offer special events for families centered on both historic events and family fun, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
