Race Weekend: June 6–8, 2026 | Race Day: Sunday, June 7

You’ve put in the miles. You’ve logged the laps. You’ve pushed through enough long rides to last a lifetime. Now it’s time to travel to Springfield for IRONMAN 70.3 Western Mass — and while you’re here, make the most of one of New England’s most underrated cities.

Springfield isn’t just a backdrop for your race. It’s a city packed with history, culture, great food, and a few surprises that’ll make your race weekend feel like a real getaway. Whether you’re arriving Friday or staying through Sunday, here’s your complete guide to spending your time in Western Mass.

First, Know Your Race

IRONMAN 70.3 Western Mass is a beautiful early-season Northeast event that takes you from the urban energy of Springfield out into the rolling New England countryside and back again. The race kicks off with a 1.2-mile downstream swim in the Connecticut River, followed by a 56-mile bike ride winding through charming New England farms and rural roads. You’ll wrap it all up with a 13.1-mile run that passes through Springfield’s beloved Forest Park before finishing strong in downtown Springfield.

The IRONMAN Village and athlete check-in are at the MassMutual Center (1277 Main Street, Springfield), and transition is at Riverfront Park. Plan your logistics accordingly — and yes, downtown Springfield is very walkable, so you won’t need to move your car much once you’re settled.

Friday: Arrive, Settle In, and Explore

Check In at the IRONMAN Village

Head to the MassMutual Center to check in, grab your race packet, and soak in the pre-race atmosphere. Walking the IRONMAN Village is one of the best parts of race weekend — you’ll find gear, fuel, and fellow athletes all buzzing with nervous excitement.

Walk the Course Area

The finish line is in downtown Springfield, and it’s worth taking a stroll along the riverfront to visualize your run. Riverfront Park is a lovely spot to decompress after a long drive and get your legs moving without any real effort. You’ll also get a look at the Connecticut River — your Friday swim spot is going to look a whole lot different by Sunday morning.

Visit the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame

You’re in Springfield, the birthplace of basketball — it would be a crime not to stop by. The Hall of Fame is a 48,000-square-foot museum with three floors of exhibits covering the history of the game, from its origins at a Springfield YMCA in 1891 right up through today’s stars. You can even shoot hoops on a full-size court inside. It’s a fun, low-key way to spend a couple of hours on Friday afternoon, and the building itself — shaped like a giant basketball — is hard to miss.

Dinner: Carb Up at a Local Favorite

Friday night is your big carb-loading window. Keep it familiar, keep it digestible, and lean into pasta, rice, or bread-based dishes. Springfield’s South End neighborhood is the city’s Italian hub, with restaurants like Red Rose Pizzeria that have been feeding locals for decades — handmade pasta, simple sauces, and generous portions. If you’d rather stay close to the MassMutual Center, MGM Springfield’s Costa restaurant serves classic Italian antipasti and pizza and is just a short walk from the venue.  Wishing for something a little different? Try Nadim’s Downtown Mediterranean Grill located across the street from the MassMutual Center and featuring fresh hummus, pita, seafood and every kind of kabob you can think of.

Whatever you choose, keep it light on fiber and fat, skip the spicy stuff, and resist the temptation to try something new. Race week is not the time for culinary adventure.

Saturday: Rest, Prep, and See the City

Morning: Easy Shakeout, Then Transition Drop-Off

Keep your legs loose with a short, easy swim or jog — nothing taxing. Check the race schedule for athlete briefing times and make sure your transition bag is dialed in. Drop off your bike and gear at Riverfront Park during the designated window and give your equipment one last once-over.

Afternoon: IRONKIDS

Bringing the family?  Sign the kids up for the inaugural IRONKIDS fun run sponsored by Dowd Insurance, Saturday at 1:00 PM.  Kids from toddler to 17 years old run age-appropriate distances along Springfield’s beautiful Riverfront Park.

The Springfield Museums Quadrangle

Once your gear is sorted, give yourself a mental break with something genuinely wonderful: the Springfield Museums, five world-class institutions clustered around a beautiful downtown green. One admission gets you into art, science, and history museums — plus the crown jewel, The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum, dedicated to Springfield’s most famous son, Theodor Geisel. Outside, the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden features life-size bronze sculptures of the Cat in the Hat, Horton, the Lorax, and more. It’s charming, it’s fun, and your legs will thank you for the easy pace.

If you’re a history buff, don’t miss the Springfield Armory National Historic Site, which houses the country’s largest collection of U.S. military small arms. It’s a fascinating piece of American industrial and military history, right in the heart of the city.

A Walk in Forest Park

You’ll be running through it on Sunday, so why not scout it on Saturday? Forest Park is one of the largest urban parks in New England — a gorgeous, tree-lined space with winding paths, picnic areas, and even a small zoo. Walking a section of the run course the day before can help calm race-day nerves and give you a mental picture of what’s to come.

Early Dinner: Eat by 5:00 – 6:00 PM

Saturday night, eat early so your body has maximum time to digest before the early Sunday start. Keep it simple: pasta with marinara, grilled chicken with white rice, or a baked potato with lean protein. Aim for a meal that’s high in easy-to-digest carbohydrates, moderate in protein, and low in fat and fiber. If Italian is your go-to, you’re in the right city. Then get home, hydrate steadily, lay out your race kit, and get to bed early.

Sunday: Race Day

You know the drill — wake up 2–3 hours before the gun, eat your practiced race-morning meal (oatmeal, toast with honey, a banana), and get to North Riverfront Park with plenty of time to spare. The Connecticut River is waiting for you, and then 70.3 miles of New England beauty.

When you cross that finish line in downtown Springfield — dig deep, because it’s a sprint finish in front of a crowd — take a moment to soak it all in. You earned it.

Post-Race: Celebrate!

Recovery Fuel

After you’ve collected your finisher medal and caught your breath, your body is going to need a recovery meal rich in carbohydrates and protein. MGM Springfield has multiple dining options ranging from casual bites to upscale sit-down meals — it’s a full resort with restaurants, a sports bar, and live entertainment all under one roof. It’s also the perfect spot for athletes and their families to gather and celebrate.

Raise a Glass

Once your heartrate comes down, grab a beer or other libation at the White Lion Brewery truck located right at the finish line. This local brewery is known for their great beer and sours and their taproom is open until 6:00 PM in TowerSquare.

Six Flags New England

If you’re sticking around Sunday night or Monday, Six Flags New England is just a short drive from downtown Springfield. It’s not exactly a recovery activity, but if you’ve got kids or a crew looking for post-race fun, it’s there.

Yankee Candle Village

Take a drive to the ‘Scenter’ of the universe – Yankee Candle Village in South Deerfield. It’s no ordinary candle shop but over 90,000 square feet of candles, housewares, and even a General Store. It snows hourly in the Bavarian Christmas Village, and there’s a fully interactive area for candle dipping and creating custom jar candles.

Quick Tips for Your Weekend

  • Getting around: Downtown Springfield is highly walkable. Most race-related venues — MassMutual Center, Riverfront Park, the Basketball Hall of Fame, MGM Springfield — are within a short walk or rideshare of each other.
  • Save money:  Download the Western Mass Pass for great deals at local attractions and restaurants.
  • Stay hydrated: It’s early June in New England, which means weather can range from cool and overcast to warm and humid. Drink steadily throughout the weekend, but don’t overdo it in the 24 hours before the race.
  • Sleep is your secret weapon: All the carb-loading and prep in the world won’t help if you’re running on five hours of sleep. Prioritize rest Friday and especially Saturday nights.
  • Trust your training: You’ve done the work. This weekend is about execution and having fun in a great city.

Good luck to every athlete competing in IRONMAN 70.3 Western Massachusetts. Western Mass is ready for you — swim hard, ride smart, run strong, and enjoy every mile.
