Greater Boston is the perfect place to get outdoors. From its historic public parks to its popular heritage trails, America’s walking city offers ample opportunities to take in the fresh air. Visitors may be surprised at the variety of camping options one can find not far from the hustle and bustle of Boston’s metropolitan center. Whether you’re looking for a beachside escape, an island adventure, or a forest retreat, here are some campsites just a short drive or ferry ride away from the city. 

 

Boston Harbor Islands in Boston Harbor 

Have you ever wanted to sleep under the stars, but have a cityscape vista in your background? The Boston Harbor Islands feel like they’re a world away even though it’s a short, fun ferry ride from Boston. History lovers and wildlife watchers will love Peddocks Island’s rich, unique history and habitat. Campgrounds are available Wednesdays through Sundays June – October. 

 

Blue Hills Reservation in Milton

With ample hiking, swimming, fishing, and skiing opportunities, Blue Hills Reservation is a wonderful place to visit year-round. The highest point in Greater Boston can be found on Great Blue Hill, giving hikers a unique and amazing view of the city. Within the reservation, Ponkapoag Camp has tent, cabin, and off-season opportunities around the 230-acre Ponkapoag Pond available for campers. 

 

Camp Nihan Education Center in Saugus

20 minutes outside of Boston you’ll find Camp Nihan. With cabins and group tent sites available and a wide variety of wildlife and educational opportunities, Camp Nihan is a perfect place for groups and families to get outside and learn about the natural world. The area is open Thursday through Sunday September – June, and Friday and Saturday in July and August. 

 

Winter Island Park in Salem

About 35 minutes away on the train, Salem makes for a perfect day trip or long weekend spot outside of Boston. Mostly known for its history, Salem is also a wonderful place for fans of the outdoors, with walking trails, public parks, and a vibrant downtown area. Winter Island is just a quick drive from the city center and offers both tent and RV camping. In addition to the camping area, visitors should also explore the food and fun along Salem Willows Park. 

 

Massasoit State Park in East Taunton

Nestled within a forest less than an hour away from Boston, Massasoit State Park is a wonderful place for hiking, fishing, biking, cross-country skiing, and, of course, camping.  The park caters to tent and RV campers between May and October. The park is also a convenient access point for Plymouth, making it a great place to experience America’s Hometown as well.
