Share your love for the game

Journey through our long and storied sports history on the Massachusetts Sports Trail – from Greater Boston, where you can cheer on our championship sports teams, to Western Massachusetts, which celebrates the birthplace of two popular global sports – basketball and volleyball. You can also up your game by trying out our trails, rivers, tracks, fields, and greens for yourself.

Special Note: Due to the outdoor nature of many of these attractions, please be sure to check each location’s website to confirm seasonal availability and hours of operation.

    Western Massachusetts Sports Trail

    Birthplace of iconic sports

Travel through Western Massachusetts to visit the birthplace of two popular global sports: basketball, invented in Springfield in 1891; and volleyball, invented in Holyoke in 1895. Take in a professional or collegiate hockey game or catch a soccer match at a European style soccer stadium. Embrace the thrill of adventure with a white-water rafting trip.

    Central Massachusetts Sports Trail

    Indulge in America’s favorite pastime

About an hour west of Boston, Central Massachusetts has a lot of love for America’s favorite pastime. First, visit Polar Park, which opened in 2021 in the heart of Worcester’s revitalized Canal District. Take a tour or catch a home game of the Worcester Red Sox — the “WooSox” — a Triple-A minor league affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. You can also show your support for the Worcester Bravehearts, a Futures League baseball team. Hop on a rail trail for a scenic walk or try your hand at indoor rock climbing.

    North of Boston Sports Trail

Discover the past and look to the future

Head North of Boston to visit the Essex Base Ball Club and see a baseball game played just like it was in 1864 — before gloves! Get outside with a guided hiking or kayaking tour through the beaches, dunes, woodlands, and marshes, or head over to the polo grounds for a picknick. Lowell offers great sporting events year-round, with Boston’s PWHL team in the winter and the Futures Collegiate Baseball League in the summer.

    Greater Boston Sports Trail

    Welcome to title town

Massachusetts is the state of sports champions, and Greater Boston is home to many of our professional sports teams. No trip to Boston is complete without a visit to the iconic venues of Fenway Park, TD Garden, and the Boston Marathon finish line. For a day trip outside of Boston, head 22 miles southwest to Foxborough to tour the 68,000-seat Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots, New England Revolution, and Boston Legacy FC.

    South of Boston Sports Trail

    Get out on the water

Take advantage of the shores South of Boston and get out on the water. Take a fishing charter, row a historic whaling boat, or rent a kayak or canoe. For those who prefer to stay on land, catch a Boston Rox baseball game, or head to the links for a round of golf.

Cape Cod & The Islands Sports Trail

Surf, sail, and stroll along stunning shorelines

Visiting the Cape this summer? Spend a summer evening watching some of the best college baseball players in the U.S. The Cape Cod Baseball League has been the premier amateur baseball league in the nation since 1885. Prefer a stroll over a home run? Explore the Cape Cod Rail Trail or walk the links of “Royal Chappy.” Get out on the water with a sailboat rental or catch a wave with a surfing lesson.
