Things to Do in Central Massachusetts

Historic: Step into America’s industrial beginnings at the Samuel Slater Experience in Webster. This immersive museum brings the story of early American manufacturing to life through interactive exhibits and multimedia storytelling. It’s a fascinating look at the innovation that shaped the region and the nation.

Outdoorsy: The Blackstone Valley offers a wide array of outdoor adventures including biking & hiking, and paddling from Worcester to the southern border of Massachusetts. A favorite hiking spot is Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Sutton – a unique natural landmark with trails to rock formations such as The Corn Crib, The Coffin, and Lovers’ Leap.

Hidden Gem: Trek Sturbridge has partnered with Twiddle T’s Pottery for an annual scavenger hunt in the Sturbridge Trails. Lucky treasure seekers have chances to find distinctly numbered and dated acorns – tucked no more than 5 feet from the trail, nestled in stump hollows, shrubs, and rock walls. Be sure to check out the Acorn Longevity Project

Craft Beverage: With locations in Fiskdale and Brimfield, Deep Roots Distillery is one of dozens of fantastic businesses in the Sturbridge Marketplace at the Falls. Kick off an afternoon with a chef-curated lunch and a craft cocktail. The neighboring Deep Roots Axe Throwing is a way to enjoy some friendly competition. For something more artsy, try your hand at splatter painting at Brush it Off or pick up a paddle nearby at PickleballU.

Unique Shopping: Don’t miss Worcester Public Market, where dozens of local food vendors and specialty shops make it a must-stop destination. Explore the Canal District in Worcester, where independent boutiques, shops, and specialty markets line revitalized mill buildings. Crompton Collective, in the district, is a curated mix of antiques, handmade goods, and vintage finds—perfect for discovering something one-of-a-kind.

Arts & Galleries: The Worcester Art Museum is home to an impressive collection spanning ancient to contemporary works. Don’t miss the freshly renovated Arms and Armor Gallery or any of the exciting rotating exhibitions. For performing arts and live entertainment, check schedules at The Hanover Theatre, which hosts concerts, Broadway tours, and community performances throughout the year.

Family-Friendly: The EcoTarium in Worcester is a standout for families. With hands-on science exhibits, animal habitats, nature trails, and a planetarium, it offers both indoor and outdoor experiences that work in every season. Kids can explore interactive displays in winter or hop aboard the Worcester Railers Explorer Express Train when warmer weather returns.

General Store Stop: Old Sturbridge Village is a premier historic and shopping destination in Central Massachusetts. For a classic general store experience, the Ox & Yoke Mercantile offers a charming year-round stop for New England-made goods, traditional toys, pantry staples, and thoughtful gifts. You can also find village-made products including redware, tin, and iron.

Roadside Attraction: Stop along historic Route 20 in Shrewsbury at the Hebert Candy Mansion, where sweet traditions have been made for more than a century. In 1917, young Frederick Hebert purchased a copper kettle, knife, table, thermometer, and a slab of marble for the total price of $11 and began crafting candies by hand. The historic mansion remains beautifully preserved today, and the company is credited with inventing white chocolate.
