Hope you are soaking up the last few days of summer and are gearing up for a beautiful fall. The challenges in front of us are daunting but we know that our tourism industry is standing strong, working together, and staying focused on being positive.
 
The foliage season gives us an opportunity to showcase the natural beauty of the Commonwealth, as well as our wonderful visitor amenities including lodging, restaurants, shops and tourism attractions.  Our new MyLocalMA campaign, which runs statewide through December, encourages residents and visitors to support local businesses and to stay close to home. We are putting our money where our heart is, right here in Massachusetts.

  • Massachusetts has a Travel Order in place that gives guidance to people coming to Massachusetts from out-of-state.  Details here.
  • Starting Saturday, August 29, 2020, travelers entering Massachusetts from Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia and Colorado are no longer required to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival or produce a negative COVID-19 test upon arrival.  They join these six other lower-risk states: Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Vermont.

MOTT Launches My Local MA Campaign
 
On August 28, MOTT and the Executive Office of Housing & Economic Development launched the My Local MA campaign.  This statewide campaign encourages consumers to support their local economies by spending their money at Massachusetts businesses and attractions, safely – in person, online, and using curbside pickup or takeout. The goal is to make the case that when we all buy local, we are doing our part to preserve the Massachusetts we know and love.  We are also emphasizing the need to shop, dine, and travel safely, which includes “masking up” when you visit these local businesses.
The campaign will run through the end of the year across social media, digital ads, digital billboards, TV, radio, and print.

You can participate in this campaign by reaching out to your members, inviting them to visit our website and downloading logos and banners from the website to use in their own business space, website, or social media. 
 
Here's the basic ask for your members:
1. Hang the flyer in the toolkit in your business
2. Use the logo on social media and on your website
3. Use the #mylocalma (and #maskupma) hashtags in their social media posts

MOTT Launches New Website
In August, MOTT unveiled a refreshed web site and changed the URL from massvacation.com to visitma.com.  The refreshed site makes it easier for visitors to discover what is unique about Massachusetts. 

MOTT Issues ‘Historic Women Trailblazers of Massachusetts’



MOTT’s Historic Women Trailblazers digital booklet, celebrating the achievements of women in the Commonwealth, is now live! With the historic commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the signing of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote, it is the perfect time to celebrate our Massachusetts Foremothers. The digital booklet features 70 amazing women “Trailblazers,” whose contributions to the Commonwealth, the nation, and the world are unparalleled. Learn about the stories of these remarkable women and their ties to Massachusetts, The Woman Suffrage Movement, commemorative sculptures and statues at the Massachusetts State House, the significance of the Sunflower, the Colors of Suffrage and much more!
 
MOTT Media Opportunities
 
MOTT is currently updating its media information on fall foliage visits, outdoor adventures, cultural and historical activities and on Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15-October 15.  Please contact Michael Quinlin to share ideas or to get more details.
 

International Update
Here are brief market updates from MOTT’s international representatives in response to the COVID-19 pandemic:

Canada – VoX International

  • The Canada-U.S. land border closure was extended for another 30 days to September 21. The Canadian border remains closed and only Canadians citizens, permanent residents and immediate family members are currently allowed into the country.  Canadians may still travel abroad, but do so at their own risk. On August 28, the 14-day mandatory quarantine was extended by one month until September 30, meaning anyone arriving in or returning to Canada must self-isolate for 14 days. The travel restrictions are reviewed every 30 days.
  • Currently, the Canadian market team for Massachusetts with VoX International is developing ideas to sustain media interest in our destination, by focusing on the Commonwealth’s many unique experiences and by educating Canadians on travel and health guidelines for visiting Massachusetts. The drive market from Canada, Quebec in particular, is expected to be the first to travel in Massachusetts once the border opens.
United Kingdom – TTM 
  • The UK is cautiously retuning to some kind of normal; masks are compulsory in all indoor public spaces and children are back at school this week.  Although British visitors cannot currently travel to the USA, the UK market is travelling, with many European destinations open for vacation travel without quarantine. 
  • Tour operators are reporting pent-up demand for the USA and are seeing positive inquiries and booking levels for 2021.  The media are looking for story ideas and anniversaries in 2021 and are keen to be the first to travel to the USA when restrictions are lifted. 
  • The MA UK office continues its program of virtual training, content inspiration and planning meetings to ensure that Massachusetts remains visible in market, to be ready and among the first to market when entry to the USA becomes possible.

The 2020 Big E Virtual Marketplace
 
The Eastern States Exposition (ESE) has announced The Big E Virtual Marketplace, to help keep fairgoers engaged in The Big E experience, despite the Fair’s cancellation due to the COVID-19 crisis.  This exciting Virtual Marketplace will launch on September 18 and run through the end of the year.  It will allow fairgoers and fans of The Big E to virtually find their favorite vendor, and shop for goods and services. MOTT will be participating with ESE in this venture, and continue to connect The Big E public with Massachusetts’ tourism regions and social media. See details here

By the Numbers

Massachusetts Lodging Industry Performance: Calendar Year 2020 through July
 
  • The first 2 months of CY 2020 saw MA lodging industry performance far outperform the U.S. averages. However, the pandemic has negatively affected the lodging industry in MA much more than the rest of the U.S.
  • The first 2 months of CY 2020, the Commonwealth saw lodging industry increases in both Rooms Sold (Demand) and Room Revenue of 7%.
  • During the same period, the U.S. lodging average increases were under 4% both for Demand and in Room Revenue.
  • Calendar Year 2020 through July has seen Demand in MA decrease by 52% compared to the same period in Calendar Year 2019. Across the U.S. for the same periods, there was a 38% decline in Demand.
  • Comparing the same periods, Room Revenue in MA declined by just over 65% while the U.S. average was down 49%.
  • However, comparing April and July, the monthly decreases in both Demand and Room Revenue in 2020 compared to 2019 have become significantly smaller.  April year over year declines were 80% for Demand and 90% in Room Revenue, whereas July saw declines of 59% and 68%.
