February is a busy month in Massachusetts, with Valentine’s Day, Skiing, Black History Month and Lunar New Year attracting visitors. Read our MA Spotlight on Susan Chu, who organizes Lunar New Year celebrations in Boston’s Chinatown.

By The Numbers

• The Smith Travel Research (STR) lodging report showed that for the month of December 2017, the Room Revenue growth in MA of 3.8%, exceeded the growth in NJ (up 1.3%) but trailed NY (up 4.5%), PA (up 15.2%) and the U.S. average (up 6.6%).

• Massachusetts growth in Rooms Sold in December 2017 (up 5.0%) far exceeded that of the U.S. (up 4.3%), but the MA Average Daily Rate decreased 1.1% compared to an increase of 2.2% across the United States.

2f6e2320-fd00-4b81-8e44-b237f66beaea.png• The Smith Travel Research (STR) lodging indicated that for Calendar Year (CY) 2017, Room Revenue in MA grew by 4.3%, significantly outpacing growth in other northeast states - NJ up 2.5%, NY up 3.4% and PA up 4.0%, but trailed the U.S. average of 4.9%.

• In CY 2017, Massachusetts outpaced the U.S. average of Rooms Sold (up 2.9% vs. up 2.7%), but trailed the growth in the U.S. of Average Daily Rate (1.4% vs. 2.1%) and Room Revenue (4.3% vs. 4.9%).

Boston Globe Travel Show

MOTT is exhibiting in booth #425 at the Boston Globe Travel Show on February 9 – 11, 2018, at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston.

The Travel Show is the largest travel expo in New England, where industry experts showcase cruise specials, adventure travel, vacation rentals, vacation deals, discounts, packages, and more.

ACT&T Meeting

The next quarterly meeting by the Advisory Council on Travel & Tourism (ACT&T) is Monday, February 26, 2018 at The Kitchen at Boston Public Market, 100 Hanover Street, Boston.


International Marketing

Paris Sales Mission

In partnership with The Clark Art Institute, MOTT’s representatives in France are hosting a sales mission to Paris, France, for tourism partners to meet with leading French tour operators selling the United States. The key objectives of the France mission are to support existing Paris-Boston airline routes on Air France and Delta, and to support the upcoming new direct airline routes of Paris-Boston on Norwegian Airlines and Primera Air launching in 2018. Meetings are scheduled with high-end luxury and niche operators, USA/North America specialists and niche activity operators. There is also a press event for travel and arts/culture journalists.

China Training Workshops

In 2016, China became the #1 source of overseas visitors to Massachusetts with 236,500 visitors spending over $615 million. With the rapid growth of Chinese travelers to Massachusetts, MOTT is partnering with regional tourism councils and China marketing experts, Bric Marketing Group (BMG), to host three free China Training Workshops around the state this April.

Save the date for the workshop nearest you. Further specifics including the location, agenda and registration will be available on our industry portal later this month. Each of the workshops run from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

ArtWeek MA

Now celebrated annually and expanding statewide, ArtWeek (April 27- May 6, 2018) is affordable fun for anyone with a creative sense of adventure and curious mind. This ten-day award-winning festival features unique and unexpected experiences that are participatory, offering behind-the-scenes access to arts, culture and creative businesses. Even culinary arts are part of this year’s celebration, thanks to a special Art of Food program.

There are amazing submissions from small towns, urban centers and creative businesses (travel and hospitality included), so don’t miss the opportunity to be in the spotlight and support arts and culture in Massachusetts. February 28 is the deadline to submit an event application, so don’t delay!
