AUGUST 2017

Dear Colleagues,

This week, Massachusetts welcomed 6,000 + delegates from the National Conference of State Legislators to the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. Our busy tourism booth was well-represented by leaders from the regional councils, who got to tell delegates from all 50 states about our great destination.

One of the highlights of summer in Massachusetts is the daily boat ride from Boston to Provincetown, Cape Cod, which is described in this month’s MA Spotlight on Julie Doherty Pagano. Seafood is also a summer favorite, as you’ll see from our Domestic PR report, and there are still lots of outdoor festivals, concerts and special events to enjoy.

So savor the final weeks of summer, and thank you for promoting all that Massachusetts has to offer.

International

Sales Mission to Italy: October 16 – 21, 2017

In order to strengthen the connection between MOTT and key Italian media and travel trade, MOTT is hosting a tourism sales mission to Milan, Italy from October 16-21, 2017. The sales mission will include travel trade workshops for tour operators and large retail agencies from all over Italy, a B2B marketplace, and a media reception and presentation.

Italy is the eighth-highest contributor of international visitors to the Commonwealth, with 63,000 in 2015. Direct air service from Italy to Boston remains constant with Rome to Boston daily on Alitalia. However, the new daily direct service from Lisbon to Boston on TAP (Portugal) enables the Italian visitor to make a one-stop connection to Boston via four Italian cities, greatly enhancing the accessibility and affordability of flying to Massachusetts.

Registration fee: $1,000 per delegate (plus travel and personal expenses).

For further information, please contact Jackie Ennis.

Space is limited, so please inquire immediately if interested.

The fair is held annually at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield and runs from September 15 to October 1, 2017. Last year’s fair saw nearly 1.5 million attendees over 17 days.

If you would like to volunteer at the Massachusetts Visitor Information Booth (shifts are: 9:30 am to 3:30 pm or 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm) or would like more information, please contact Phyllis M. Cahaly.

Domestic

Flavors of the Season

The Domestic PR team continues to highlight the sights, experiences, and tastes of summer. The conversation was notably savory in July, with a social campaign focused on one of the Commonwealth’s most valuable assets - seafood. Highlights included launching a special chef interview series on the MassFinds blog, promoting Twitter and Facebook posts, and hosting a lively Twitter chat with special guest Legal Sea Foods. The Twitter chat rocketed organic impressions to 54k+ for that day alone, and helped with the year over year boost of 670k+ impressions for the month. In August, the spotlight falls on the perennial favorite, ice cream. You may recall ice cream’s significance in 5 Things Summer, and we feel this frozen treat deserves a little extra attention as the sweet days of summer are on the verge of melting. Help us amplify the message by Tweeting, Instagramming, and Facebooking #icecreamMA. Should you have any particularly eye-catching images we can work with, please send them to Shannon Healey.
