APRIL 2017

Dear Colleagues,

Visitors to Massachusetts will notice signs of spring in the coming weeks. With daffodil and lilac festivals, pow-wows and dragon boats, Patriots Day events and opening day at Fenway Park, there is something for everyone in Massachusetts. Take a look at MOTT’s 5 Things Spring for more springtime inspiration.

One of our top visitor attractions is the 121st Boston Marathon on April 17. For a behind-the-scenes scoop on this great race, read our profile of Race Director Dave McGillivray.

Also in this issue, you’ll find news on upcoming industry events and opportunities to connect with MOTT to promote your region, attraction or venue.

Enjoy springtime in Massachusetts.

Travel Statistics

Tony D’Agostino, MOTT’s Research Director, reports the following travel-related data:

Massachusetts Lodging Room Revenue for January 2017 was up 1.3% compared to January 2016. Most of the increase was due to the growth in “Rooms Sold” rate of 2.7%. “Occupancy” rates across the Commonwealth were up 0.5%, and the “Average Daily Room Rate” decreased by 1.3%. The difference between the Occupancy and Sold rates was due to the growth in “Rooms Available” of 2.2%.

Fiscal Year 2017 through December 2016 saw growth in both state and local lodging Rooms Tax Collections. Massachusetts state wide rooms tax collections grew by 3.5% to $156.1 million while local rooms tax collections were up 3.6% to $126.7 million. The growth in room tax collections differs from that of the lodging revenue because tax collections lag behind the actual hotel stay by a couple of months.

Germany Sales Mission: June 18-23

MOTT invites you to join a Massachusetts sales mission to Germany June 18-23. Traveling to the three cities of Frankfurt, Hamburg and Hanover, you will have the opportunity to meet with Germany’s leading tour operators selling the USA: DER Touristik, Thomas Cook, Meiers Weltreisen, Kuoni, America Unlimited, Canusa, and CRD. The format of the mission will be a mix of sales calls, trainings, media event (in Hamburg), informal industry dinners, and trainings to call center staff. The objectives are twofold: 1) to focus on new product development and continued partnership to promote existing itineraries and programs; and 2) to support and promote the air service from Germany to Boston including LH routes from Frankfurt and Munich and newly expanded service from Air Berlin Dusseldorf to Boston.

This mission is an excellent opportunity to promote your destination, hotel, or attraction with leading decision makers in the German industry currently selling Massachusetts.
