Partnering with the planet: Down Island Farm promotes sustainability and community
Down Island Farm is a woman-owned business on Martha’s Vineyard, MA. Below, the team shares some details on their business and the importance of supporting local.
Describe your business in 50 words or less.
A quintessential New England business, Down Island Farm uses the wild Atlantic Ocean and sun to produce 100% natural Martha’s Vineyard Sea Salt.
The renewable ocean source and sustainable production practices and materials result in a delicious, authentic New England flavor from which memories are made or rekindled.
What makes your business unique?
In our business planning and actualization, we looked for then-leveraged natural resources we could honorably use to improve the diets of our customers. It took years of looking and one bag of sea salt and vinegar potato chips to figure out the product.
Nine years later, Martha’s Vineyard Sea Salt is considered THE salt of the island and is also the biggest packaged product exporter from the island to New England businesses.
We educate! Our international and United States customers alike learn about the life-sustaining nature of sea salt, sustainability, the British Blockade, and the true resourcefulness of New Englanders.

Why is it important to support businesses like yours?
Local food production is a necessity where supply chains break — the more food independence each region can build, the better for all.
Supporting a sea salt business (salt being a staff of life as we humans cannot survive without it in our bodies nor cure foods when the need arises) is also supporting at least 50 island businesses and another 110+ businesses on the mainland. That is real, positive economic impact from a natural resource being produced with a small carbon footprint.
Do you want to say anything to your customers or guests?
We treasure both our natural resources and salty customers. Taste is memory! Contributing to New England food memories are our joy. Be it MV Blueberry Honey Sea Salt on watermelon or MV Lemon Verbena OB grilled locally caught fish or the joy of our premium sea salt in caramel ice cream, we treasure eaters!
