Making music accessible: Historical Piano Concerts offers hands-on experience for guests

Historical Piano Concerts, Inc. is located in Ashburnham, MA. Below, the team shares some details on their business and the importance of supporting local.

Describe your business:

Our classical piano concerts, during the spring and fall, now in our 36th year, are based on the Frederick Collection of 24 original grand pianos representing composers from Mozart and Beethoven to the early 20th century. Often over 3 hours, tours include lively introductions to pianos with docent-played examples. Guests are welcome to play.

What makes your business unique?

We have the only American collection of historical pianos by influential makers (Vienna, Paris, Leipzig), restored to fine concert condition. Pianos have been assembled to interpret the music of each major composer of the standard repertoire, circa 1790-1930, with pianos like their own. We also allow and encourage a hands-on experience for guests.

What does your business look like?

We had five live concerts through spring 2021 and plan five more in May 2022. Admission is $15 per adult; kids and students are free to make shows accessible to a broad audience. Concerts are held at a local church. All fall 2021 concerts were recorded and posted to our YouTube channel. Tours of the Collection resumed July 2020 with limited numbers, required masks, and by appointment. Tours are still by appointment for up to ten people. We offer over a dozen professionally produced CDs of the pianos.

Why is it important to support businesses like yours?

School music programs have been cut back for so long, and many people are unfamiliar with classical music. These pianos offer far more varied, exciting sounds than the homogenized, standardized modern piano. Besides enabling people to enjoy the music in its true, lively, original colors, we are preserving two “endangered species” – the pianos and the music – and helping musicians gain new insights into the composers’ works, sounding as the composers intended.

Do you want to say anything to your customers?

We are enormously grateful for the strong, continued support of our faithful concertgoers and musicians! The outpouring of devoted sponsorship has sustained our work when many businesses were hurting. Thank you!

How has your business changed or adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic?

We had two online concerts at the Piano Collection in January 2021 and the other in May. These helped us realize the advantages of an online presence, which we have followed up with videos of all our fall 2021 concerts, now posted on our new YouTube channel.
