Instrumental to our community’s culture: Emmanuel Music, Inc. strikes the right chord

Emmanuel Music, Inc is an ensemble of singers and instrumentalists based in Boston. Below, the team shares some details on their group and the importance of supporting local.

Describe your business

Emmanuel Music, located at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Boston, is dedicated to enriching the community’s cultural life through the transformative power of music. Expanding on a 50-year tradition of performing weekly Bach cantatas in a liturgical setting, we perform concert repertoire from baroque to contemporary in large and small ensembles.

What makes your business unique?

Emmanuel Music is the only organization in the country that presents a full Bach Cantata each Sunday from September to May in the liturgical setting that Bach intended, and which continues live at Emmanuel Church with strict COVID-19 guidelines in place. Founded in 1970 by Craig Smith, and now under the leadership of Artistic Director Ryan Turner and Principal Guest Conductor John Harbison, we’re celebrating 50 years of glorious music.

What does your business look like?

In addition to the live Sunday Bach Cantata presentation to which all are welcome, Emmanuel Music has pivoted to a robust online presence, offering major concerts, chamber music festivals, and educational offerings on YouTube. The primary production of the 2020-21 season, Handel’s “La Resurrezione,” premiered in May 2021 on our YouTube channel.

Why is it important to support businesses like yours?

Emmanuel Music cannot exist and thrive without the generous support of many. We are grateful to our supporters, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Boston Cultural Council, and several foundations that have sustained our operations. In addition, the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) program has enabled us to continue to support our musicians.

Do you want to say anything to your customers?

We are grateful to all who interact with us through gifts, tuning in to our online offerings, or attending our Bach Cantata presentations. We hope that Emmanuel Music is providing beauty and comfort in this challenging period.

How has your business changed or adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The pandemic allowed Emmanuel Music to have a worldwide online presence, which we didn’t envision before the pandemic. In addition, social distancing of performers, both instrumental and vocal, has opened up Emmanuel Church to creative uses of the space not possible before the pandemic.
