Enriching the community: Island Roots Camp Group, LLC helps future generations thrive

Island Roots Camp Group, LLC is a women-owned educational and enrichment program provider in Marblehead, MA. Below, the team shares some details on their business and the importance of supporting local.

Describe your business in 50 words or less.

Island Roots provides sustainable and responsible educational enrichment programs with a mission to empower generations of kind, capable, and conscientious individuals. Academic year after school clubs, extended day programs, summer day camp, events, staff, and community training.

What makes your business unique?

Island Roots is the only local small business and independent provider of extended day programs serving families in public and independent school settings. Our core values of Knowledge, Nature, and Wellness are fundamental to all we do. Opening during a pandemic allowed Island Roots to support our families through remote learning and to grow with our community as we returned to school. We are educators and camp professionals focusing on making the best programs possible for elementary-aged children and beyond.

What does your business look like?

Programs include After School Club at Tioga Way (Marblehead); Club TED with Island Roots (Tower School, Marblehead); Johnson Extended Day with Island Roots (Nahant); Night Hikes; American Red Cross First Aid/CPR classes; American Red Cross Babysitting classes; American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid classes (coming summer 2022); remote learning pods (academic year 2020-2021, Marblehead); and Day Camp 2.0 (summer 2021, Marblehead). Island Roots also sells merchandise through our website to support our new local business and share who we are!

Why is it important to support businesses like yours?

High-quality programming for children outside of school hours can be difficult to find. Island Roots is proud to offer a local independent option that goes beyond the “holding tank” model of enrichment activities. We provide educational enrichment with a purpose. Island Roots offers programming that truly helps individuals become kind, capable, and conscientious. Because we all want that for our community and the world.

Island Roots starts by treating its staff well, creating a positive and supportive work culture. We treat our people right, so we can treat your children like family.

Do you want to say anything to your customers or guests?

We survived one of the hardest years of our lives and look forward to many more with you and our growing community. Thank you for your support!

How has your business changed or adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The pandemic was a catalyst to the start of Island Roots Camp Group. We, the three owner/operators, started in our (now) CEO’s living room with her children and two of their friends providing remote learning support, then moved into a temporary space to provide a remote learning pod for ~10 children. We transitioned into a larger space as schools went back in person for after school and vacation day programs, all with our mission and community in mind.
