Accessorized in art: SylvieBags creates one-of-a-kind vintage handbags

SylvieBags is a woman-owned handbag and accessory online shop based in West Tisbury, MA. Below, the owner Sylvie shares some details on her business and the importance of supporting local.

What makes your business unique?

For 24 years, I have created one-of-a-kind home and fashion accessories made from rare vintage mid-century textiles. These accessories cannot be produced elsewhere in the same way or copied. My excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail have also attracted a following of high-end clientele. As a result, I occupy a unique niche on Martha’s Vineyard, and customers return every summer to purchase from me. Customers always receive outstanding customer service!

What does your business look like?

I work out of my home studio and sell online through my website and social media. Additionally, my work is featured in two local galleries, and I sell at the Vineyard Artisans Festivals during the summer and fall months. Free local delivery is available for all of my products.

Why is it important to support businesses like yours?

My business contributes to the local economy and MV’s art community by offering a unique and sought-after product. In addition, my booth at the local artisans’ fair is a point of attraction for visitors and locals alike. My business also contributes to local charities, such as MV Community Services, the local animal shelter, and Sandy Paws Rescue Inc.

How has your business changed or adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic?

When the pandemic first started, I immediately turned to make face masks. I initially donated them to essential workers on Martha’s Vineyard and later began selling them. I took the opportunity to upgrade and optimize my website for e-commerce and participated in online personal and business development courses. Consequently, a mastermind group of women business owners emerged that I am currently still a part of. We meet once a week on Zoom and help each other grow our businesses.

Do you want to say anything to your customers?

I adore my customers! Many of them have visited me since the start of my business in 1997; I always enjoy sharing stories with them about our families and what we like to do on Martha’s Vineyard.
