North of Boston
On the North Shore you can enjoy both stunning ocean vistas and sprawling historic estates. Gloucester’s Hammond Castle, which sits on a cliff high above the Atlantic Ocean, was built by eccentric scientist and inventor John Hays Hammond, Jr., and features an eclectic mix of architectural styles. 10 minutes up the road in Rockport, you’ll find sailboats bobbing in the water off the rocky coast, along with Motif No.1, a red fishing shack known to art lovers as a frequent subject of painters.
Head east to Ipswich where you can tour Castle Hill at the Crane Estate, a grand manor home sitting on 2,100 exquisitely landscaped acres that meander down to the sea, and soak up some sun on Crane Beach’s four-mile sandy beachfront. If you have time, catch the sunset up the road at the Plum Island Pink House, but be sure to get there early to jostle for a good spot among all of the other photographers.
