In 1843 the home of Capt. William H. Whitfield was where Japanese youth Manjiro Nakahama first lived upon coming to America after being rescued by the crew of the captain's whaleship from a tiny Pacific island. Manjiro eventually helped open Japan to western trade and is a folk hero in his native land to this day. The Whitfield-Manjiro Friendship House is open weekends in the summer and year round by appointment.
