Wellfleet S.P.A.T.: Shellfish Promotion & Tasting
Wellfleet Shellfish Promotion and Tasting, S.P.A.T., is a non-profit organization chartered to preserve, protect and promote the town's coastal economy. This is achieved through the preservation of Wellfleet's legendary shellfishing industry; the protection of its pristine environment on which the entire community depend; and the promotion of Wellfleet's tourism economy.
Even the name honors the oyster. The acronym SPAT is also the name for a baby oyster. Each year, S.P.A.T. offers shellfish farm tours, the Annual Wellfleet OysterFest and other programs. Proceeds from these activities fulfill the organization's mission and include a college scholarship program, community grant awards and initiatives to support Wellfleet's shellfishing and aquaculture industries. To date, SPAT has awarded over $735,000 in support of the local economy.
