Looking to do something fun this April Vacation? In Massachusetts, you’ve got options. Here are some spring break ideas the whole family.

Are we missing something? Let us know or submit your own event or attraction in our business database.

Greater Boston

April is the perfect time to visit Boston – the weather is warming up, and Patriots’ Day gives families plenty of opportunities to experience the city’s history and culture. History buffs should stop by the Freedom Trail and the Boston Common (don’t miss the Swan Boats and the Frog Pond Carousel). The Museum of Science, the New England Aquarium, and the Boston Children’s Museum are wonderful places for kids of all ages to explore and have fun. Sports fans can visit Fenway Park – fun if there is a game or not – or cheer on some of the best athletes in the world at the Boston Marathon (check out our spectator tips).

North of Boston

If there is an animal lover in your family, be sure to go on a whale watch out of Newburyport or Gloucester. And any budding princes or princesses should see the Hammond Castle in Gloucester and the Winnekenni Castle in Haverhill. Feeling crafty? Smolak Farms has you covered with April Vacation programming for kids. The Salem Willows is a great place to get outside, eat some fun food and explore the shore.

South of Boston

The history and heritage of Plimoth Patuxet is an experience to learn and grow for the whole family. If modern history is more your family’s style, they’ll love the ships of Battleship Cove. Patriot Place in Foxboro offers shopping, dining, and of course, the Patriots Hall of Fame. If the weather permits, you can take the family to one of the area’s many farms and gardens – The Winslow Animal Farm, the CN Smith Farm, and the Blithewold Arboretum are some of our favorites.

Cape Cod & The Islands

April weather is probably too cold to jump into the water at one of the Cape’s many beaches, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a ton to do along the peninsula and the islands. Facilities are closed until summer, but you can still see the Cape’s best beaches, minus the crowds. Museum lovers of all ages should see the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, the Chatham Railroad Museum, or the Cape Cod Maritime Museum. The Cape Cod National Seashore makes for an incredible day trip any time of year.

Central Massachusetts

If anyone is at all interested in farms and farm animals – Central Massachusetts is the place for you as many local farms and orchards open their gates for the season. Kids and adults alike can step back in time at Old Sturbridge Village who host special events throughout April Vacation week. Similarly, the EcoTarium in Worcester hosts Community Science Week for kids throughout vacation week. Finally, Worcester’s Polar Park and the Worcester Red Sox make for a perfect day for any baseball fans.

Western Massachusetts

If your kids love to be outside, they have to see Western Massachusetts. April is a perfect time to try hiking or biking as a family – the Hoosac Range trail, the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, and the October Mount State Forest all offer easy-to-moderate trails and amazing views. At Mount Greylock, families can sign up for hikes, geocaching, scavenger hunts, and more to get outdoors. For more of a thrill, Six Flags New England offers special Spring Break Days to accommodate the whole family. Creatives in the family should see the programs all vacation week at the Normal Rockwell Museum.
